“THIS IS SO COOL,” Mandy said. She and her dad were walking down merchandise row, where hauler after hauler was opened on one side to reveal all sorts of items for purchase. One could find everything from stickers costing about a dollar to one-hundred-dollar collectibles. If you wanted it, the haulers sold it.

A few of the big drivers, like Hart Hampton, had their own merchandise trailers. Others relied on their race shop trailer to sell their wares. For example, PDQ racing had a trailer that sold Bart Branch gear and also that of other drivers in the PDQ stable.

“I need to get Lynn something that has Will Branch on it,” Mandy said, and after surveying all the trailers, Max and Mandy returned to the Taney Motorsports hauler, where Max took out his credit card and bought Mandy’s friend a T-shirt and a key chain. Then it was off to the PDQ trailer, where he exercised his charge card again.

“Thanks, Dad,” Mandy said as she clutched two plastic shopping bags.

“So now you’re into this racing stuff?” Max asked as they walked up to a food stand. While they’d eat dinner later with Terri, some popcorn and soda sounded like an ideal snack to tide them over.

He also wanted to rent Mandy a race scanner and headset, something that Alan Henson had suggested would help Mandy enjoy the race.

Henson attended at least six races a year and had advised Max that, unless you were in a suite with a television set going, you often didn’t know what was going on, as the track didn’t broadcast play-by-play over an audio system. It also didn’t have a big scoreboard, like at a professional baseball, football or hockey game. The track relied on a scoring pylon, where whoever’s car number was up top was the race leader.

“I think I like this,” Mandy said as she took a sip of her soda.

“Whatbeing here?”

“Everything. I think Terri’s pretty cool and she knows everyone. She’s fun. I can’t believe I got Bart’s autograph and she’s going to get Will’s for Lynn. Can I call Lynn?”

“Sure,” Max said. His daughter balanced her snack food and drink as she retrieved her cell phone. “You’re going to call her now?”

“Why not? I already sent her some pictures.”

Max glanced to his right, watching some people line up for a racing simulator similar to the one Rocksolid had used last weekend. This time it was another driver’s number and sponsor decals on the car. He gave a wry grin. His daughter’s world had expanded and he was no longer her number-one focus. As she talked to Lynn, her voice was excited as she relayed the day’s events.

He strolled along, following Mandy, who like many teenagers, had mastered the art of walking and talking. He’d watched races on television, seen Watkins Glen in person, but this one had a different feel to it, aside from the credentials holder he wore around his neck.

Maybe it was the intimate size of the trackthat many people in such a small space intensified everything.
